There are many, many factors to this story that have been omitted. This is a 'perspective', not a history. Because there was one and it wasn't simply a group of old men and women moaning away. It was standing up for a set of values in the face of something thought of at the time as 'progressive and modern'.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326867358384170422.post-73080965734408178072015-11-21T13:49:01.882+13:002015-11-21T13:49:01.882+13:00Thoughtful response. The role of a public servant such as your self is to represent in a fair and unbiased manner a range of New Zealand views on contentious issues such as this one. A good example of this is the Te Ara NZ Encyclopedia article you used as one of your references. The rest of your sources and quotes are completely one sided and biased toward the view that abortion-on-demand is the only reasonable stance, supposing that this represents the vast majority of New Zealand views. This is not the case. The New Zealand law as it stands is very restrictive, which was the goal of our parliamentary repesentatives, to balance women's rights with the protection of unborn children, female and male. In fact, the long title of the act includes the statement that it's purpose is to "provide for the circumstances and procedures under which abortions may be authorised after having full regard to the rights of the unborn child". It is your right to -as a private citizen- advocate for a change in this law to take away the rights of the unborn child- but not use your position as a public servant to push your own agenda. Regardless of the morality of advocating the denigration of unborn human beings, it is also completely unprofessional. Librarians are purveyors and caretakers of our nations history in totality, including the history they don't agree with. Partisan bias destroys the respect society has for your profession. Please reflect on how you would feel if another librarian only selected Pro-life aspects of NZ history and opinions in such a way, using your Pro- abortion taxes to do so. Yours sincerely, Cedric Piggin. cedric@free.net.nzAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326867358384170422.post-65236209193522032852015-11-14T08:08:37.204+13:002015-11-14T08:08:37.204+13:00Wow - I had no idea our laws were so archaic.
